Originating from initiatives by the German Foundation for Monument Conservation, two European projects and various individual activities by participating members, the European Route of Brick Gothic today encompasses cities, regions and buildings, mainly from the southern Baltic Sea region. For the first time in centuries, national borders in an enlarged Europe are no barrier for keen explorers of cultural heritage. Visitors are now able to explore fascinating sights on both sides of the German border. The association brings together members who are aware of the value, significance and cultural tourism potential of their Brick Gothic buildings, and who are keen to pool their resources and raise awareness of their cultural heritage among the European public. The “European Route of Brick Gothic” Association’s role is to promote art and culture, science, education and international understanding. Developing sustainable cultural tourism along this route is in keeping with this role. The Association’s aims are:
- the maintenance and further development of the historico-cultural European Route of Brick Gothic;
- the registration and documentation of Brick Gothic architectural monuments along the route;
- the presentation of the history and development of European Brick Gothic and its architectural, art and historico-cultural context;
- the presentation of the European Route of Brick Gothic and its buildings to the European public;
- the production of informative events and historico-cultural activities and projects on European Brick Gothic;
- the design and production of further education activities for European Brick Gothic members and stakeholders;
- the production of local, regional and international publications, presentations and events to raise awareness among the public of the “European Route of Brick Gothic” and to involve local citizens and stakeholders;
- the development and dissemination of information material and the certification of electronic media on European Brick Gothic.
