To this day the hall church of St. Nicholas (“St. Nikolai”) towers above the city. Its two different spires make it particularly memorable. This largest and most elaborate church in a wide area was built in several construction phases in the course of the 14th and 15th centuries.
The highlights of the rich and varied decoration are the panel paintings of the winged altarpiece from the Cranach workshop and the so-called Tetzel box, a “relic of the Reformation”. The old sacristy with its well-preserved painting offers a rare impression of the intense colours of medieval rooms.
